The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is considered a true bear (before recent genetic studies, it was thought to be a member of the raccoon family). The Chinese people call the panda Da xiong mao, which means "giant bear cat", and consider them a symbol of peace. With their unusual cat-like eyes and front paws that have an opposable "thumb", pandas are quite different from other bears. Come spend a year with these unusual, peaceful endangered creatures.
